may not serve for life without authority

When members of a Sikh Temple in California sought an election of directors for the Temple , the incumbent directors said no election was necessary because they served life terms according to the doctrine of the Temple .
The Temple had incorporated under the religious organization provisions of the California nonprofit corporation law and promulgated bylaws to set forth its internal governance. The bylaws said nothing, however, about the length of a director's term.
