Financially squeezed nonprofits often seek to generate new revenue through new business ventures. But such efforts can carry serious legal, as well as economic, risks. This webinar will explore the unrelated business income tax (“UBIT”), how to define it, how to avoid it, and how to deal with the consequences of having “too much” of it.
Nonprofit Issues® editor Don Kramer will present a program of particular interest to organizations that operate primarily with volunteer boards and little or no paid staff, including small community associations, kids’ sports leagues, booster clubs and other school-related activities, advocacy and educational groups, artistic and cultural organizations, animal rescues, social clubs and many others.

This webinar will explore the top ten areas of legal concern for a charity’s annual gala dinner dance, bikathon, day in the park, or other special fundraising event.
Most nonprofit organizations involve volunteers in governance, fundraising, and many forms of direct service delivery. Volunteers can offer many benefits to the organization, but can also raise significant legal issues. Volunteers are not inherently riskier than employees, but it is important to identify the critical legal issues that arise from volunteer participation, if it is not managed well.

Charities that seek contributions nationally must typically register in 39 states and the District of Columbia before starting to solicit. Furthermore, for-profit fundraisers are also required to register and file their contracts and other documentation with many states. Since many states are increasing their enforcement efforts to ensure that charities and fundraisers are complying with initial and annual registration requirements, it's important that charities and fundraisers abide by these statutes—especially since noncompliance can result in the imposition of significant fines and penalties.
