Religious Broadcasters, churches challenge Johnson Amendment

A new suit has been filed by the National Religious Broadcasters and several Christian churches in Texas seeking a declaratory judgment that the “Johnson Amendment”, which prohibits 501(c)(3) charities from participating in political campaigns, is unconstitutional. It has already stirred a significant discussion of the future for the prohibition on electioneering by churches and other charities. The complaint is brought “to vindicate the right of every church and religious nonprofit to express what their faith teaches on every issue, including political matters, as is their right and their duty,” according to a press release by the NRB.
