Court refuses to decide tax status

A federal District Court in Florida has refused to decide whether the Christian Coalition of Florida is a tax-exempt organization when the IRS refunded taxes paid by the Coalition before a decision was reached in a refund suit. The Coalition had sought 501(c)(4) exempt status because it does a substantial amount of lobbying in addition to its focus on family values. The IRS denied its application in 2008 on the ground that it was similar to a political party and not a social welfare organization. The Coalition paid taxes between $103 and $317 for each of three years and sued for a refund. Shortly thereafter, the IRS refunded the taxes with interest and claimed the case should be dismissed...
