Do you have a rockstar board?
Or does it limp along listlessly performing the minimum necessary to keep the organization going? Pushed by the CEO because no one on the board wants to be responsible for leadership. Most boards are somewhere in between. Functional perhaps, but not fully functional. More like what you would call semi-functional.
This webinar will help you get beyond a semi-functional board. By acting intentionally at every step of the governance process, you can improve your organization’s capacity, resilience and effectiveness.
We will start with understanding whose organization it is. What is its position on the life cycle of organizations?
- How do you build a board for what you need?
- Should you have an orientation for all new members? And a refresher for others?
- Do the directors understand the responsibilities of the board?
We’ll have a short but specific list to consider.
- Do they understand their own responsibilities, and how their personal responsibilities differ from the board responsibilities? Do they enjoy serving on the board? How can you get the best from the most?
- Have they built in personal protections from liability? And avoided doing the things that are absolutely prohibited and done the things that are absolutely required?
- Do they understand how the conduct of board meetings can make a difference? Is adopting a consent agenda enough?
- Do they understand the role of committees? And advisory committees?
- Do they know how to improve the partnership with the CEO?
- Do they know how to avoid surprises?
- Do they know who is watching, and who can make their lives miserable or threaten the organization?
We will discuss these topics and more, pointing out subtleties that can make a difference. We don’t promise that you will develop a rockstar board (whatever that is). But we do think we can help you move toward a more fully functional board to improve the organization.
Ashley Suhler Tobin, Standards for Excellence Director for the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations, will join Don Kramer, editor of Nonprofit Issues, for the presentation.
