The first group of small nonprofit organizations required to file the new electronic Form 990-N could lose their tax-exempt status if they have not filed the form by midnight May 15. The rule covers all organizations exempt under Section 501(c), not just charities exempt under 501(c)(3). The new requirement was included among the charitable reforms in the Pension Protection Act of August 2006. It requires nonprofits that were previously exempt from filing a Form 990 or 990-EZ because they normally received less than $25,000 in revenue to file the new form or lose their exempt status.
