Tax Court denies exemption to African artifact museum

A nonprofit created to promote and exhibit African Art has lost its charitable tax exemption and has seen the Internal Revenue Service revocation sustained on appeal by the Tax Court. The Court agreed that the intended museum had not shown that it operated exclusively for charitable purposes. The saga started when Dr. Victor Seghers, a cardiologist, began developing an interest in Tikar culture after spending time in Cameroon. Tikar was one of the tribes in Cameroon when it was controlled by Belgium in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Seghers personally acquired artifacts that he imported to Texas, and more that took a 73 pages of “shipping documents” to ship to Belgium from 2001 through 2015...
