A thrift store patron who was attacked and robbed in the store’s parking lot cannot recover from the store, an appellate court in Iowa has held, because the store had no duty to protect the woman from a third party assault when it had no reason to anticipate that such assault might occur. A woman and a friend parked in front of the thrift store on a warm day and noticed two men who made them nervous. They spoke to the store clerk who told them not to worry. When they left the store, they were attacked and one’s purse was stolen. She sued the store for negligence in failing to protect her in the lot.
